Swimming and Surf Life Saving superstar Sasha Reid and devoted rugby player Blair Murray are amongst the Future Champions selected for the 2019 programme.
Now in its thirteenth year, the Future Champions Programme is designed to give outstanding Taranaki secondary school athletes the opportunity to be the best they can be.

The group of ten selected athletes represent a range of individual and team sports, from road cycling and swimming, to rugby and volleyball.
This year’s selection includes swimming and surf life saving star Sasha Reid, now in her third year of the programme. Sasha recently returned from the World Surf Life Saving Championships in Adelaide, Australia where she was a member of the NZ Junior Black Fins and medaled in both individual and team events, with the Junior Black Fins taking out the World Championship. She is also a national title holder in both sports across multiple events, and holds several Taranaki records in swimming and surf life saving.
Sasha is joined by three second-year champions – surf lifesaver Claudia Kelly, volleyballer Keegan Joe, and Jacob Kneepkens who specialises in rugby.
Six newbies have also been selected this year, they include:

Blair Murray (NPBHS) Rugby
Caitlin O’Connell (SHGC) Basketball
Fletcher Moles (NPBHS) Canoe Racing
Henri Lehrke (FDMC) Road Cycling
Lucy North (NPGHS) Swimming and Surf Life Saving
Tom Butland (NPBHS) Surfing

Sport Taranaki & TSSSA are excited to announce the 2019 Future Champions.

The programme, coordinated and run by Sport Taranaki and the Taranaki Secondary School Sports Association - TSSSA, starts in term two and runs through to the end of term three, with a series of workshops to develop and support the athletes with nutrition, mental skills, leadership and more. The programme also provides wrap around services to ensure they can compete at their best.

The 2019 programme was officially launched on Monday 8 April at the Sport Taranaki offices
