Taranaki will be well represented at the World Under 19 Beach Volleyball Championships in Nanjing China. Keegan Joe, David Jeffrey, Maya Dickson and AJ Joe (Head of Delegation and Boys coach) will be heading to China on the 5th July for the World Youth Beach Volleyball .

4 teams were chosen to represent New Zealand at the World Championship held every 2 years.

Spotswood College’s Keegan Joe is paired up with Ryan Gunn (Auckland) and will play in the main draw of the tournament (28 teams).

David Jeffrey (ex Spotswood College) will partner Jack Mcmanaway (Tauranga) in the qualifying tournament with 24 other teams to fight it out for the last 4 remaining spots in main draw.

Maya Dickson (NPGHS) will partner Ella Akkermann (Tauranga) in the main draw. While Brittany Alison-Carnie and Katie Sadlier (Auckland) will also fight it out in the qualifier (22 teams) to join the other New Zealand team in the main draw.

The New Zealand guys and girls top teams won their main draw spot by placing first or second at the Oceania Championships held earlier in March at Canberra.

Nanjing will host the World championships from the 10th – 15th July.

It will feature athletes Under 19 for both genders with 50 teams registered in the woman’s draw and in the men’s draw the full compliment of 52 teams in the draw. With 6 reserve teams sitting outside the draw trying to get in to the tournament.

The groups had been training hard throughout the winter with training camps held at Mount Manganui, Auckland and New Plymouth. The climate will be a change from the recent temperatures we are experiencing in New Zealand as the climate in Nanjing expected to be in the 30’s.

Previously Taranaki has had 2 other athletes represent New Zealand at World Junior Championships. Jared Wilson ( Le Lavandou – France 1999) and Olivia MacDonald (Porto – Portugal 2014).

The World Under 19 championships has meant sacrifices for 2 of the athletes with Both Keegan Joe and Maya Dickson earlier chosen to represent their National Junior Indoor Volleyball teams at the Asian Championships in Iran and Thailand but both choosing to concentrate on the beach volleyball Youth World championships in Nanjing.

Later in October is the Youth Olympics in Argentina for beach volleyball. With Dickson already securing a spot in the team with Tamara Otene (Auckland) while Joe and Jeffrey find out in July if they also join the girls in Buenos Aires at the Youth Olympic Games.

Both Maya Dickson and Keegan Joe have been or are part of the TSSSA/Sport Taranaki Future Champions programme and would like to thank them for all the support of assisting themselves and athletes toward reaching their goals. They have been absolutely fantastic. As well as the TSB Community Trust.
