New Plymouth was served a triple whammy when three local teens were among the four Under 19s selected to compete for New Zealand in the Beach Volleyball Oceania Championship in Australia.

Young athletes Maya Dickson, Keegan Joe, and David Jeffrey, will compete in the Canberra tournament from March 1 to 3.

The championship is a precursor qualifier, and if the trio place in the top two of their respective gender categories they will make it to the Beach VolleyBall Youth Olympics in Argentina in October.

Getting to this point was a long journey for the teens who all played on the Beach Volleyball Pro Tour circuit during the Summer.

Sporty New Plymouth Girl's High School student, Dickson, participates in multiple sports, but has insider help from her dad, Brendan Dickson who coaches volleyball at her school.

"I'm stoked, like all the hard work and dedication, and just everything's all paid off now."

"I gave it 100 percent and now it's the next goal, to get to the Youth Olympics."

In addition, Dickson has a strong indoor pedigree was already selected for the NZ U19 Indoor Volleyball Squad for 2018.  Beyond that, Dicksons 'big goal' is to get a scholarship to study in America for next year.

Jeffrey was a former Spotswood High School student who represented his school and region, having competed overseas before and won international competitions he was excited to travel overseas to compete again.

The apprentice electrician has a phobia-like dislike for coming second teamed with the ability to stay calm under pressure. Jeffrey said the upcoming tournament was simply the first step, and they still have have a long way to go.

"I just like to be the best I guess."

Davids partner Joe will take on some of the best in Oceania after the pair won the U19 Mens event in the knock out tournament at Oakura Beach earlier this month.

"After we'd won the qualifying tournament we were absolutely stoked, we were over the moon and thrilled to get to go away, get to go somewhere."

"I'm already super happy with this being my third trip away for beach volleyball."

Both Joe and Jeffrey, along with Dickson and her partner were the top Under 19 pairings on the Pro Tour.
