Sacred Heart Girls' College's Hannah O'Connor added another national title to a growing list after she won the senior girls section at the New Zealand cross-country championships on the Ascot Golf Course in Chistchurch.
O'Connor (Sacred Heart) and Phoebe McKnight (Hutt Valley High School) ran stride for stride from the gun with the lead see-sawing throughout. It was not until the final 200m that O'Connor broke away for a three second winning margin.
The senior boys race saw Chris Devaney (New Plymouth Boys' High School) put in a stunning effort to close a 20m gap on the leaders in the second of three laps and was justly rewarded with fourth place.
Anton Besseling (NPBHS), dominated his race in the senior boys para section, winning the 2000m race by
almost two minutes from Finn Pollock (Papanui High School).
New Plymouth Boys' High School took out silver in both the three-person and six-person teams event. Devaney,
Oak Jones and Luke Rabe led the team home for the three-person honours and they were ably backed up by
Moritz Pudrutt, Chris Johnson and Jack Elliott.
The following day, the 5x2000m regional relays were held over the same course. Although Taranaki were unplaced, individual times were impressive.
O'Connor recorded fastest time in the senior girls event with Devaney coming in sixth fastest.
At the the conclusion of the competition, the New Zealand Secondary School cross-country paper team was announced which included O'Connor and Devaney.
They were also named in the national team to compete at the Australian cross-country championships in Hobart in August.
