TSSSA Suspends the remainder of Term 1 Events

Taranaki Secondary Schools Sports Association wish to advise that all Taranaki Secondary Schools Sports Association (TSSSA) events are suspended until the end of Term 1, 2020.

This follows the New Zealand Government announcement this week banning large gatherings and events and is consistent with the announcement made by School Sport NZ to suspend the National School Sport Calendar until 6 April.

“While we value the opportunities presented to young people in their sporting endeavours, we are in an unprecedented era and need to make the best decision for the community,” said Paula Wells, Chair of the TSSSA.

We have considered a number of factors to come to this decision, and these include current under-resourcing of St John Ambulance and our significant volunteer base within our Regional Sporting Organisations, who we do not want to put at adverse risk. Both raise significant health and safety concerns for TSSSA.

“Central also to all TSSSA’s decisions is the health and safety of our secondary school students”, TSSSA Regional Sports Director, Rebecca Scott, stated.

This decision will be reviewed before the start of Term 2, 2020. It is possible that alternative dates may be found for some events, however, others may be cancelled. TSSSA will work with sporting associations and schools to make further announcements in due course.

Thank you for supporting this decision.  Although we realise that it will be disappointing for many, we are responding to an evolving situation to which we need to be socially responsible.
